Once you understand what resolution is you can begin the process of encoding. Encoding is the process of changing the size and quality of a video or photo. In todays world of digital image capture, everyting is shot in HD but not everyone has the capability to view a high def video so it needs to be encoded in to a smaller size to play on various screens. Smart phones, iPads, Laptops and 50-inch plasmas all have different size screens. In addition, bandwidth is still a factor in delivery of HD video to every device so I use the Adobe Media Encoder that ships with the CS5 Production Premium bundle to encode my videos for delivery. My HD version goes to YouTube, my web version goes to the client for the review and revision process and my SD version goes to a DVD. Eventually HD will be more available and encoding will become less of a process but until then it remains a very important part of a quality production.
